Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a challenge for everyone. Not to mention, it can be challenging for couples who want to get along and have children. Fortunately, there are solutions available that can help.

You can use medications like Viagra (sildenafil), Levitra (vardenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), and Stendra (beveletin-sildenafil) to treat ED effectively. These medications are typically prescribed for a range of conditions, including erectile dysfunction, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and pulmonary arterial hypertension- the main concerns for men with ED. These medications work by relaxing blood vessels in the body, which helps to improve blood flow. However, there are also many other medications that are not recommended for treating ED, including drugs like sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and avanafil (Avodart).

If you are struggling with ED, then you may be wondering, “How does Viagra (Sildenafil) work?” To find out more, we recommend reading a few articles that you may have read. And, of course, we also encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our medical professionals with the knowledge to find out more!

Understanding Viagra (Sildenafil) and Its Active Ingredients

Viagra is a brand-name medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. The increased nitric oxide can cause the muscles in the corpus cavernosum to relax, enabling increased blood flow into the penis. This increased blood flow allows an erection to occur.

The active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, is also found in Viagra. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, which help to relax the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow during sexual stimulation.

The mechanism of action of Viagra involves the inhibition of the enzyme PDE5, which is responsible for breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP is a chemical that plays a crucial role in smooth muscle relaxation in the corpus cavernosum. By reducing cGMP levels, Viagra allows for increased blood flow into the penis, resulting in an erection. PDE5 is responsible for breaking down cGMP, leading to the relaxation of smooth muscle cells and increased blood flow into the penis.

It’s important to note that Viagra does not work instantly, and its effectiveness may take several hours or days to develop. It is important to use Viagra as directed by a healthcare professional and not exceed the recommended dosage to avoid any potential side effects.

What is the Difference Between Viagra (Sildenafil) and Viagra-based Treatments for ED?

While ED medications are available to treat, they do have certain differences. The main difference between these two medications is their active ingredients.

Viagra (Sildenafil) and Viagra-based Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction:

  • Generic Form:Viagra-based Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction
  • Brand Name:Cialis
  • Available Dosage:Standard Dosage
  • Dosage:Dosage Guidelines

Viagra is available as an oral tablet and a topical cream, both of which are available in the United States. However, it’s important to note that these creams may not be effective for everyone. The same goes for oral medications.

Another difference between these two treatments is the formulation. Viagra is formulated with ingredients that contain different amounts of the active ingredient, sildenafil. While sildenafil is available in the United States, it’s important to note that this formulation is typically used for different conditions. For example, it may be used for pulmonary arterial hypertension or as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Some men may find that they need a higher dosage to achieve an erection, while others may need a lower dosage to achieve it. It’s important to discuss the different medications, dosages, and formulations with a healthcare professional before starting a treatment.

Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.

Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.

US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.

The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.

“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”

Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.

It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.

‘Popular target’

The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.

“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.

“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”

Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.

“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.

“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

The decision to reclassify the drug, which was introduced in the UK in August this year, is good news for men’s health. Viagra Connect is a significant public health option for men with erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to get or keep an erection sufficient for sex.

“We understand some men may avoid seeking medical attention and, once bought treatment we’re not aware of well. We, too, promote the safe and discreet use of Viagra Connect as a reliable and effective way to treat erectile dysfunction.
